The Bird D'pot

Wonder if anyone could help me with the first bird. I can't seem to identify this one. I thought perhaps a Grasshopper Sparrow, but the description mentions a yellow spot over the eye and I don't see one here. What do you think?

We have lots of juvenile Bluebirds. They were hatched in the ends of the pipe fence around the yard. Didn't look like a good spot to me, but seems to have worked out well.

The dreaded Brown-headed Cowbirds have arrived. Not a fan of these birds.

Male

Female

I'm enjoying the hummingbirds. This one likes to sit and stare at me when I'm reading on the porch. Not sure if he wants me to go away or if he's simply curious.

  2. Great photos. I love the one of the hummingbird sitting still! Seldom get that lucky around here. The first one looks like what my bird book calls a "house sparrow" but I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows exactly what kind of cute little sparrow is sitting there.

  3. Hi Betty. I puzzled over that sparrow and looked on the Internet and in my own books and I'm now convinced it is a Grasshopper Sparrow, probably a juvenile or duller female. There are some good photos on

    1. Thanks Phil. I checked out the website and played their song. I have heard that particular call, so I think you are right. Thanks for your expertise.

  10. Does not look like a Grasshopper Sparrow to me. The bill looks far too heavy. It looks most like a female House Sparrow.
