The Weekend Roundup - I

I'm going missing for a couple weeks or so. Off on a traveling adventure. I will try to visit yours when I can.

Today's assignment is: Starts with I, Favorite, and Inside.

Starts with I: How about an INDIAN. This photo was taken during a stomp demonstration at the Chickasaw Cultural Center.

Favorite: Besides taking pictures of critters, I also enjoy taking pictures of flowers. When I uploaded this flower to my computer, I discovered a surprise. A weird looking INSECT was enjoying a pollen snack.

Inside: Looking outside from INSIDE the barn.

Just Because: Caterpillars are the babies of INSECTS and therefore considered an INSECT, too.

And Finally: Peach ICE CREAM. Yum!

It's Dog Day

Gus doesn't get to have a free-for-all very often these days. We fear he might bump into a copperhead or a rattlesnake, and you know he would try to smell it. Wouldn't be good. DC went down to check the deer feeder (set up for photo hunting only) and gave Gus the treat of an early morning run.

Gus saw this Big Red Dog (the neighbor's dog) as he walked by on the road. Of course Gus barked and Big Red stopped to see who was disturbing his peaceful morning stroll. He dismissed Gus as a mere nuisance and continued on his way. The morning light sure made his coat a deep red.

Betty Davis eyes! Bella is one of the sweetest dogs ever...

This is Bella and Callie receiving a little puppy love.

Weekend Roundup - H

This week's assignment: Starts with H, Favorite, and Horse.

Starts with H: HAT starts with H. This is me trying on HATS at a friend's HOUSE. I kind of liked this HAT.

But this is a more impressive HAT. It's Andrew Jackson's inaugural HAT.

Favorite H: This is yet another HAT, but more importantly it's a HUG between great grandpa and grandson. A favorite picture of mine.

Horse: Or in this case, HORSES, and a little mule. I'm especially partial to the horse in the left side foreground. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it is a Strawberry Roan. Beautiful!

Just Because: HELICOPTER starts with H. This one landed to take meet an ambulance. It will take someone to a hospital in Oklahoma City.

And Finally: In my opinion, no H post would be complete without a Ruby-throated HUMMINGBIRD. I enjoy watching them especially in the evening and the evening light enhances this one's beauty.

And because I love them so much, how about one more HORSE? I saw this guy on one of the back roads I frequent. He looks like a nice horse.

Okay, what about yet another horse. This one is a beauty and also found during a back road ramble.

The Bird D'pot

All photos taken in Southeastern Oklahoma.

I saw this Roadrunner run across the road in front of me and up into a tree. This isn't a great shot, his face is blurry, but I'm posting it anyway. I've never seen a Roadrunner in a tree before, so I grabbed my camera out of the seat beside me and got off this one shot before he zoomed out of sight.

Blue Heron

The Hummingbirds are about the only bird I'm finding these days. They are all avoiding the heat by hiding in the trees.

Saturday Critters

This silly dilly decided to inspect the interior of a live trap even though it didn't contain any food. He was stuck, so took advantage of his problem and snapped a few pics before he was released. Hopefully Mr. Armadillo learned an important lesson.

A Green June Beetle was seen walking across the porch. Gus followed him, but wouldn't get too close. I don't blame him. this guy is a bit scary.

Mr. Big Bad Bull was staring at granddaughter as she was taking pics of a scissor-tail flycatcher. She then turned the camera on him. He didn't look very happy. Photo credit to Granddaughter who loves taking pictures like her Grandma.

I took Granddaughter for a back road ramble with her camera while she was here visiting. We stopped when we saw this Great Egret on the far side of a pond. I tried to get a halfway decent shot, but he was so far away it didn't turn out very well. After I uploaded the pics onto my computer, I discovered a surprise. Feral hogs! I didn't even notice them through the viewfinder. I guess I thought they were rocks or something. Pleasant discovery.

Weekend Roundup

This weeks assignment: Starts with G, Favorite, and Great.

Starts with G: GUITAR starts with G. This is my Fender GUITAR. It looks nice next to this sign which says, "Unless you are Chris LeDoux or GEORGE Strait, leave your boots at the door".

Favorite G: This is GREEN Antelopehorn. It was everywhere this past spring. I liked the dainty little flowers against the GREEN leaves.

Great: A GREAT Egret is pretty GREAT.

Just Becasue: How about a GUINEAFOWL. GUS loves to bark at them when we pass by.

And Finally: A GREEN Katydid GRASSHOPPER.

Random Fun

The Good: Daughter came to visit with two of the grands. I took them to the Chickasaw Cultural Center for a lesson on the history of the area.

While there we walked down to the pond...

...to feed the fish and the turtles.

The Random: Later we had a harrowing ride on a golf cart down to the village. One of the tour guides realized she had kept us too long at one of the exhibits. so told us to hop on the cart and she would drive us to the stomp dance demonstration. I think she was practicing to be a race car driver. She kept that jitney at top speed around curves and up and down hills. A Six Flags adventure ride seems tame after that experience. :) We held on for dear life and eventually made it safely to our destination.

We made it in time to watch and learn about the stomp dance.

The Fun:  The next day, the kids enjoyed feeding carrots and apples to the horses and the horses enjoyed eating them.

The Weekend Roundup - F

Today's assignment is: Starts with F, Favorite, and Flower.

Starts with F: FORD starts with F. Even if it is a wooden FORD.

Favorite F: This is grandson picking peaches from a peach tree. Peaches are a FAVORITE FRUIT.

Flower: Spiderwort is a FLOWER.

Just Because: My FAVORITE FOOD is Mexican. Yum!

And Finally: How about a little humor. FUDGE begins with F. This is a sign along I-44 in Missouri. It states, "The best fudge comes from Uranus!" So far we have successfully avoided the Uranus FUDGE FACTORY, but the sign always gives us a good laugh.

The Bird D'pot

I pass by a pond every time I go in to town by way of the back roads. I was happy to see this Great Egret perched on a dead tree, so stopped and took several pictures.

On the way back, the Egret was still there, so took a few more pics. I didn't see the Blue Heron until I uploaded the pics to my computer. He was camouflaged beside the dead tree limbs.

It was also a Bobwhite Quail kind of day. I have only seen them on the ground, so was happy to see this one perched on a fence post.

A little farther down the road, I saw this guy.

These Black Vultures look like they belong in this dead tree.

Saturday Critters

All photos taken in Southeastern, Oklahoma.

I haven't been on a back road ramble in a while. I'm still trying to get organized from our move. But I did find a dragonfly and butterfly on a trip into town.

These pics were taken out my kitchen window. Made good use of the zoom on my camera. I wish the deer would come out during the day so I could get better shots, but they always come when the light is waning. On this particular evening, there were six does and these two bucks grazing at the edge of the woods.
