Deer Day

Sometimes coffee on the back porch really pays off. I happened to look toward the pond and saw a deer on the far side. Fortunately, Gus didn't see her, so I sent him inside. He would have barked and scared her away.

I couldn't tell what she was doing until I zoomed in with my camera. She was nursing her baby. How lucky am I?

She saw me watching her...

...but didn't seem to mind.

She stayed there until her fawn was finished nursing, then they took off into the woods. Not something I've ever seen before, but sure happy she shared with me.

Weekend Roundup - W

This week's assignment: Starts with W, Favorite, and White.

Starts with W: WORK starts with W. This is our friend and neighbor getting ready to burn brush. One must wait until it is dry enough and not windy. Last Saturday was that kind of day.

Favorite: Of Course, a horse. Isn't he a beauty. His name is WHISKEY and he likes carrots.

White: WHISKEY is WHITE.

Just Because: How about a WET female cardinal? It was pouring down rain, but she still patiently WAITED for her turn at the feeder.

And Finally: These are the WATERFALLS Sioux Falls, SD is named for.

A Day for Deer

I can often be found on the back porch looking for birds in the surrounding trees. Yesterday was no different. However, as I scanned the trees for a hawk I heard, I happened to see this deer walking along on the far side of the pond. Fortunately, Gus was asleep and didn't bark, so I got a couple of shots.

Even though spotted me.

I glanced down at Gus to make sure he was still asleep and when I looked up the deer was gone. However, I saw what I thought was her laying partially under the cedar tree. Much to my surprise, when I zoomed in, it was a fawn. My first ever. I wish the weeds were not in the way of a clear picture, but nonetheless I was excited.

Later that afternoon, during one of my back-road-rambles, I saw this buck run across the road and into the trees. His curiosity got the better of him. He stopped to stare. Thank you Mr. Buck.

Weekend Roundup - V

This week's assignment: Starts with V, Favorite, and Violet.

Starts with V: VULTURE starts with V. Can you see him perched on the roof?

Favorite: Of course, my favorite must be a horse. Meet the newest paint - VENUS. She is a little girl and gentle enough for the kids to ride.

Violet: I saw these pansies in the McDonald's drive-through. They look VIOLET to me.

Just Because: This is one of my favorite VIEWS of Devil's Tower. I was lucky enough to find some buffalo in the foreground.

And Finally: A VASE filled with birthday flowers.

Cows and Horses

Curious cows.

This beautiful Bay is a new addition to the neighborhood...

...as is this Paint and Red Roan. They were happy to come up to say hello and are gentle enough for the kids to ride.

Nap time for baby.

After the rain, these horses were enjoying a warm day.

Weekend Roundup - U

Today's assignment:  Starts with U, Favorite, and Under.

Starts with U: This Red-headed Woodpecker is UPSIDE down on this tree.

Favorite: This little fella's legs are still UNSTEADY. Mama had to help him.

Under: When I let Gus out the other morning, he started barking his mean bark. I went outside to see what was going on and saw this stray dog under the truck. Fortunately, Gus scared him away.

Just Because: I took this photo of a flag on a rock in the middle of a lake in Wyoming about 3 years ago. As I looked through my old pics last week, I discovered an UNEXPECTED surprise. Look closely in the tree. Two eagles! And I thought my first eagle pics were last year.

And Finally: This Blue Grosbeak looks UNHAPPY to see me with my camera. I can almost hear him mumbling under his breath.

It's a Barn Kind of Day

I found this barn hidden in the trees...

...and this one in plain sight.

Sunday Birds

Morning coffee on the back porch provided me with a few birds to post.

This tufted titmouse sang a song from his stage high up in a tree...

...and finished his performance with a little pole dancing.

This summer tanager came in a little closer this morning, which allowed me to get a better shot.

Mama cardinal brought a fledgling along with her to the feeder. I was in the right place at the right time for this shot.

Another fledgling cardinal waited on the fence.

My favorite shot of the week—this pileated woodpecker. I have been trying to get a pic of one for a few years. Each time I saw one, I didn't have my camera. When I had my camera, I never saw one. The story of my life.

To get out of the house for a bit, Hubs and I took a drive down past Lake Texoma. On the way back, I happened to look at a pole along the road. I yelled, "Stop!" He did. Even though Mr. Woodpecker was on the dark side of the pole, I got the shot! It was almost as exciting as my first eagle pic.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Stay well and don't forget to smile!
